India-based communications provider Tata Communications has unveiled its plans to build a 165,000 sq ft (15,300 m) data centre in Singapore. The company will be investing US$180 million in the facility.
Slated to open in early 2010, the data centre, named Tata Communications Exchange, will be housed in Paya Lebar Business Park.
Vinod Kumar, president and chief operating officer, said the new data centre will directly employ some 50 personnel, although more jobs could be indirectly generated via customer deployments.
According to Kumar, the centre will serve the communications needs of both carriers and enterprises in the Asia Pacific, with a focus on the financial and media sectors.
Shared facility
“With the economic slowdown, companies are quite nervous about building capital data centres,” said Kumar. “We’ve had many discussions with banks and service providers to move their plans from operating a capital data centre to moving to a shared facility such as ours.”
Services that will be offered at the upcoming facility include collocation, managed hosting and managed storage.
“We warmly welcome Tata’s latest expansion here,” said Beh Swan Gin, managing director, Singapore Economic Development Board. “These investments represent a strong vote of confidence for Singapore, and underline the growing partnership between Tata and Singapore.”
