KUALA LUMPUR, 13 OCTOBER 2008 - Taiwanese Telco firm Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) has chosen French communications giant Alcatel-Lucent Ethernet to manage a fibre-to-the-building network expansion project throughout the island.
According to executives from both companies, the contact is part CHT’s “Optical Era Project”, which involves an investment of about US$1.8 billion to construct an island-wide fibre optical network over five years. The goal of the project is to bring fibre optic connectivity to 2.4 million subscribers by 2010.
As the largest telecommunications service provider in Taiwan, CHT aims to provide Ethernet/MPLS solutions for the fibre-to-the-building (FTTB) initiative, which would provide high-speed services to larger residential and business subscriber bases across Taiwan.
Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) provides telecommunication and information-related services, such as city call, long-distance calls, international calls, GSM, data communication, Internet services, broadband networking, satellite communication, intelligent network, mobile data and multimedia broadband.
High bandwidth, high-scalability
President of Alcatel-Lucent activities in Taiwan, Larry Chai, said that Alcatel-Lucent will supply CHT with its 7450 Ethernet Service Switch (ESS), a scalable Ethernet/MPLS aggregation solution that enables carriers to provide high-bandwidth, high-speed Internet (HSI), video and voice services.
Chai said: “The expansion will equip CHT with higher network capacity and offer FTTB subscribers fast data transfer at the download speeds of 10Mbps, 50Mbps and 100Mbps for services including high speed Internet, IPTV and Virtual Private Networks.”
He said: “CHT has been a customer of our Ethernet/MPLS aggregation solutions since 2005 and following a successful trial in August, Alcatel-Lucent has once again been chosen for this network expansion project.”
