Offering end-to-end video telephony and other value-added services By Carol Ko
15 May 2009

HONG KONG, 15 MAY 2009 – China Telecom, one of the three largest mobile operators in the country, has launched Internet protocol multimedia subsystem-based evolution-data optimised (EV-DO) video telephony in China’s major cities.

The company said it has selected Huawei Technologies (Huawei), a China-based provider of next-generation telecommunications network solutions, as the sole vendor providing an IMS-based EV-DO video telephony solution to the telco’s 40 million subscribers.

More than 400,000 users of CDMA2000 (code division multiple access 2000) in China’s largest cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou, will be the first to enjoy such services during the commercial launch.

Centralised network structure

Huawei’s Internet protocol multimedia subsystem (IMS) network for EV-DO video telephony solution adopts a centralised network structure, and provides a unified platform to each packet network in different cities. This solution will allow the operator to achieve rapid network deployment and shorten the time to market.

After completing the new network, China Telecom will be able to offer end-to-end video telephony and other value-added services, including MRBT (multimedia ringback tone), MCID (multimedia call ID), multimedia conference, mobile global eyes, and mobile streaming media services. In particular, subscribers can also receive missed-call notifications for video calls via SMS.
