Company releases new solution which it claims cuts data centre costs in half By Subatra Suppiah
01 Dec 2008

SINGAPORE, 1 DECEMBER 2008 - Most companies waste an estimated 50 per cent of the cost of running Web applications due to highly inefficient use of server and network resources, according to Citrix Systems. Citrix is a leader in application delivery infrastructure.

Removing this overhead has been largely impractical in the past because the inefficiencies of each unique Web application are too complex and dynamic for network and server teams to understand without deep application knowledge.

The need for a reliable solution is so dire that a failure to deliver content and services at the expected quality could result in millions of dollars of lost productivity and customer perception.

High costs

Besides, the costs associated in consultancy fees and implementations of solutions are so high that many enterprises, especially in the current economic climate, are left with few options.

To address these issues, Citrix Systems has released NetScaler 9, which it claims is the industry’s most advanced solution for radically improving the efficiency of Web-based applications.

Combining advanced application delivery controller (ADC) technology that slashes server and bandwidth requirements, with integrated knowledge of the application, Citrix is able to cut data centre costs in half for the entire process of enterprise Web application delivery, the company claims.

The product is targeted at not only large-scale business-to-business and business-to-consumer Internet-centric organisations (for example, search engines, Web hosts and financial services) but also enterprises and service providers.

New features

Highlights of the 350 new features of the NetScaler 9.0 software update include:

•    AppExpert ‘Expert-in-a-box’ templates that cut new application deployment from days to minutes
•    Template enhancements and modifications that can be posted and shared by user via Citrix community portal
•    Integrated powerful XML protections to safeguard against XML attacks
•    New AppExpert Service Callouts which integrate logic from third-party applications into NetScaler policy decisions for IP address screening
•    Rate-based policy enforcement to ensure that internal and external service-level agreements are met
