KUALA LUMPUR, 30 SEPTEMBER 2008 - A Malaysian collaboration has announced a national annual game to test and promote managerial and leadership competency.

The game is a realistic computer-simulated business game that tests the knowledge and skills of players in the fields of production, investment, pricing, finance and marketing strategies, said Wilson Tay, chief executive officer of the Malaysian Institute of Management (MIM). MIM is organising the game, sponsored by Ricoh Malaysia.

The latter is spending RM500,000 (US$146, 000) for the game, said its managing director, Lim Eng Weng. Ricoh is a global digital office solutions firm.

Tay said Ricoh Malaysia would be the game’s platinum sponsor until 2013.

Last year, Ricoh pledged RM80,000 (US$23, 300) to support the inaugural MIM-Ricoh national management game, Lim said. The winning team took part in the Asian management game in Kolkata, India.

Team-based competition

Tay explained that the game is a team-based competition for corporate managers to pit their decision-making skills against one another. After the qualifying rounds, the national winning team would compete at the regional level.

“Through the competition, players are able to understand the importance of strategic planning, sound decision-making, economic scenario planning and performance reporting,” said Tay. “The game also enhances one’s understanding on how different decisions impact business operations.”

Ricoh is taking an active role to cultivate excellence in management practices especially at the mid to senior levels, said Lim. “We firmly believe the annual national management game will be able to uplift competitiveness and competency of Malaysia’s managers.”

MIM’s Tay adds: “The Ricoh-MIM collaboration is in line with our mission of providing management leadership development, training and education to our members and community of practising managers.”
