Malaysia contingent of MSC Companies at APICTA 2008

KUALA LUMPUR, 21 NOVEMBER 2008 - Malaysian companies formed the largest winning group at the eighth MSC Malaysia Asia Pacific ICT Awards (APICTA 2008), hosted in Jakarta, Indonesia, 12-15 November.

Government agency Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) vice president, Niran Noor, who headed the Malaysian contingent, said Malaysian companies won in three categories, as well as awarded merit in four.  “Malaysia, which was up against the likes of Singapore, Pakistan, Australia, Hong Kong and Thailand, was successful in three categories:  Security (won by Nexbis), Industrial Applications (won by GPRO Technologies), and Tertiary Student Project (won by Multimedia University).”

“The Merit winners are in the categories of Secondary Student Project (Foon Yew High School), Tools & Infrastructure Applications (Arahe Solutions), Tourism and Hospitality (Universiti Malaysia Sarawak) and Research & Development (GlobalCLAS Technology Sdn Bhd),” he said.

Malaysia was represented in 16 categories from 20 companies, two institutes of higher learnings (IHL) and two secondary schools who were winners and merit winners of the MSC Malaysia APICTA competition, which took place last October in Kuala Lumpur.

The Asia Pacific ICT Awards (APICTA) is an international Awards Programme (www.mscapicta.com.my), initiated by MDeC to increase information & communications technology (ICT) awareness, as well as to assist in bridging the Digital Divide. Participants of the Awards Programme comprise 16 member-economies of the APICTA Alliance, comprising Australia, Brunei, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Korea, Macau, Malaysia, Myanmar, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Testimony to skills in Malaysia

Noor said that this success was testimony to Malaysia’s abundance of ICT talents and solutions.

“Since its establishment in 1999, MSC Malaysia APICTA has successfully celebrated more than 160 achievements of Winners,” said Noor.  “More than 80 of the winners are Malaysia Status Companies. APICTA is a platform for these companies and our students to gain global exposure.  This competition is in line with MDeC’s commitment to assist the companies in gaining market access and global opportunities and creating talents for the world.

“Among the benefits of MSC Malaysia APICTA is that winners would automatically qualify for into MSC Malaysia Development programmes such as technopreneur development and capacity development programmes,” said Noor. “In addition, the companies were able to forge new partnerships with members from the other economies.”
