KUALA LUMPUR, 1 OCTOBER 2009 – Computing students from Malaysia-based Taylor’s College won two awards at the inaugural IT security firm F-Secure’s recent national cyber security challenge.
Two teams from Taylor’s College, School of Computing (SOCIT) claimed two major awards at the inaugural F-Secure National Inter-Varsity Security Tech Quiz Championship 2009.
SOCIT programme director, Banumathy Subramaniam, said the college’s teams competed against 15 other teams from public and private colleges and universities in the championship round in July. “Members of Team SES and Team Bastion battled through a two-day challenge, which tested their speed, accuracy and knowledge in security issues on the Web.”
The F-Secure National Inter-Varsity Security Tech Quiz Championship 2009 was organised by F-Secure to promote cyber security awareness. Some 56 teams from 17 colleges and universities around Malaysia participated. The event was endorsed by industry regulator the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission and MSC Malaysia initiative guardian, the Multimedia Development Corporation.
Improved cyber security understanding
Subramaniam said team SES comprised Bachelor of Computer Science students Ng Keng Yih, Stanley Foong and Wo Su Shyan secured third spot overall and won a Nokia Smartphone each.
Keng Yih said he and his teammates were overjoyed to finish in the top three. “We’re glad to have participated in this competition, which has boosted our confidence, improved our understanding of cyber security issues and enhanced our analytical and critical thinking skills.”
Team Bastion emerged as the Best Creative Team, said Subramaniam. “Members Ivan She, Jimmy Lim and Ng Ek Wyn from the Bachelor of Computer Science programme claimed the award for their outstanding team name, logo and poster. They each won a Philips MP4 player.”
“It was the first time participating in a national level computing competition for most of the students, yet they managed to answer questions intelligently and stayed calm under pressure,” she said. “I also want to thank the lecturers for their dedication in preparing students for this challenge and guiding them to success.”
