JOHOR BAHRU, 1 DECEMBER 2009 – Malaysian WiMAX firm Packet One Networks (Malaysia) (P1) has extended WiMAX services to the state of Johor.

Chief executive officer of P1, Michael Lai, said: “Wireless internet surfing via WiMAX is already available in selected parts of Johor Bahru and P1 will aggressively roll out its services to the rest of Johor throughout 2009 and 2010.”

“With this announcement today, P1 is taking the next step in expanding its WiMAX network nation-wide, and is committing itself to the wireless broadband state of Johor,” said Lai. “We are committed to bringing the benefits of WiMAX and broadband to the people, visitors and investors in Johor Bahru. P1 will cover at least 70 per cent of the population here by the end of next year and 30 per cent of the Malaysian population by mid-2009.”

A subsidiary of Malaysian network firm Green Packet, P1 is rolling out WiMAX (worldwide interoperability for microwave access) throughout Malaysia.

Bridging the digital divide

Lai said the company’s deployments of Wireless@KL, May 2008, and Wireless@Sunway, July 2008, are key initiatives that will bridge the digital divide for Malaysians, in line with the Malaysian government’s objective of raising broadband penetration to 50 per cent by 2010. The company has also announced that it will deploy P1 WiMAX in Penang beginning this month.

“Broadband shouldn’t remain a privilege, and we believe that all Malaysians have the right to broadband and the Internet as today, information is the currency of the world,” said Lai. “We are very pleased to see that our dream of connecting all Malaysians to the Internet is starting to come to life, as P1 W1MAX is not just about access, it is about touching hearts, enriching lives and connecting humanity. At the end of the day, technology is not special, but life is.”
