KUALA LUMPUR, 1 SEPTEMBER 2009 – Malaysian WiMAX telco Packet One Networks (P1) has marked its first year anniversary of the launch of its WiMAX service with the announcement that it has passed the 80,000 subscriber mark.
“The subscriber base of more than 80,000 in the first year may be the largest WiMAX uptake, relative to population size in the world,” said P1 chief executive officer, Michael Lai.
“It’s an amazing feat to become one of the world’s largest and leading WiMAX telco in just one year,” said Lai. “This is a result of my fellow Packeteers—the talented, hardworking and passionate people that made P1 what it is today—and also of the desire that Malaysians from all walks of life have for affordable, hassle-free, wireless high-speed broadband.”
WiMAX [Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access] is a telecommunications technology that provides wireless transmission of data using a variety of transmission modes, from point-to-multi-point links to portable and fully mobile Internet access.
On track to cover 65 per cent by 2012
Lai said P1 began to cover key locations within Ipoh, Kuantan, Kuala Terengganu and Tampin. “This confirms P1 WiMAX is now available in nine states within Malaysia, namely Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Johor, Penang, Kedah, Perak, Pahang, Terengganu and Negeri Sembilan.”
“With P1 W1MAX coverage in nine states, P1 effectively has the nation’s widest WiMAX network of more than 30 per cent in West Malaysia,” said Lai. “P1 aims to deliver 35 per cent population coverage by 2009, 45 per cent by 2010 and 65 per cent by 2012.”
“Since our successful launch in August 2008, the response for P1 W1MAX has been tremendous with many eager consumers wanting to experience P1 W1MAX,” he said.
