Ideal for bandwidth-hungry applications and latest connectivity services By Veronica C. Silva
20 Jan 2010

SINGAPORE, 20 JANUARY 2010 – Businesses looking for more high-speed connectivity now can get up to 10 times faster speeds for roughly the same price with new fibre technology made available through Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel).

With 2010 showing more promise for applications requiring high bandwidth, SingTel is now including in its business suite of solutions a new fibre optic solution based on the gigabit passive optical network (GPON) technology.

The service currently offers symmetrical speeds of up to 100 Mbps, with the capability of scaling up to 1 Gbps in the future.

“By making ultra high-speed fibre services more affordable than ever, SingTel will empower businesses in Singapore to harness the full potential of cloud computing and other bandwidth hungry infocomm applications, such as high-definition video conferencing,” said Chan Yim Leng, SingTel’s vice president of business products.

Enterprises and SMEs

The new service, dubbed as Meg@POP eLite, is positioned as a cost-effective, ultra high-speed connectivity available to large enterprises and service providers who can provide a suite of connectivity or connectivity-related services to businesses.

Service providers can provide the infrastructure and maintenance support to businesses which cannot afford the upfront investment costs. These service providers can offer on-demand grid services, cloud computing and even software-as-a-service applications through the Meg@POP eLite connectivity.

“With Meg@POP eLite, SMEs can enjoy powerful ICT solutions and business software that only large companies could afford in the past. These solutions allow them to avoid heavy upfront investments in ICT infrastructure and maintenance costs, while improving productivity and simplifying business operations,” Chan added.

Meg@POP eLite is the latest addition to SingTel’s Meg@POP suite of solutions, which includes Internet protocol virtual private network (IP VPN) connectivity.

Meg@POP eLite will also be available through SingNet, SingTel’s Internet service provider. SingNet eLite will offer up to 100 Mbps broadband Internet access, making it ideal for businesses needing high upload speeds for applications such as Web hosting.
