Deal is to provide a maritime broadband solution for Torm Shipping By Subatra Suppiah
19 Nov 2008

SINGAPORE, 19 NOVEMBER 2008 - Singapore telco SingTel has won a multi-million-dollar contract from Torm Shipping, a leading European maritime company.

The contract is to implement SingTel’s global maritime very small aperture terminal (GMVSAT) service for Torm’s fleet of 100 ships.

SingTel’s GMVSAT service provides Torm with a maritime broadband solution with seamless, worldwide coverage over major shipping routes.

Equipped with advanced auto-beam switching capability, the service will help the Danish company to save time and resources by allowing its vessels to move from one ocean region to another without the need for re-configurations of satellite communications equipment.

‘Always on’ broadband

The solution provides secure ‘always-on’ unlimited broadband connectivity. This allows Torm to extend office applications such as e-mail, Internet and Intranet access and voice communications to its employees at sea more cost-effectively than pay-as-you-use services.

The company will enjoy enhanced ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore voice communications with the use of state-of-the-art session initiation protocol (SIP) phones installed on each vessel. These devices offer the functionality and user-friendly features of business phones.

“VSAT opens the doors for the future. We can now ensure better communication between vessel and office, but not least between vessel and home. We now have to think in new work routines both in the office and onboard,” said Claus Usen Jensen, Torm’s executive vice president, technical division.
