Vendor launches the ‘missing part in the desktop virtualization puzzle’ By Ross O. Storey
12 Sep 2008

SINGAPORE, 12 SEPTEMBER 2008 - Thin clients will become a vital component in tomorrow’s IT infrastructures, according to 2X Software Ltd, a US-based software developer for the booming server-based computing market.

2X – a Microsoft and RedHat partner - says thin client computing controls spiraling PC management costs, centralizes application and desktop management, improves security and performance and allows users to work remotely.

A thin client, sometimes called a lean client, is a computer (client), without a hard drive, in client-server architecture networks which depends primarily on the central server for processing activities.

With the increasing popularity for VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure), the company says demand for manageable and affordable thin client solutions, is ‘exploding’.

Secure and controlled setting

2X Software CEO, Nikolaos Makris, said that the benefit of virtualization to most companies was that mobile users can take thin-clients; laptops or USB drives/sticks and recreate the corporate computing environment in a secure and controlled setting. This takes a lot of the expense out of managing hundreds or thousands of fat client desktops.

"Thin clients sales are on the upswing as CIOs are focused on power savings, security and manageability,” Makris said. “A Virtual Desktop Infrastructure product, combined with a vendor independent thin client solution like 2X Thin ClientServer, is the most efficient way to achieve this.”

2X is a privately held company with offices in the USA, Germany, UK, Cyprus and Malta. Its management team has experience in developing and selling network infrastructure software.

Product launch

Makris was commenting at the launch of 2X’s ThinClientServer 6, which he says companies can use to familiarize themselves with the technology and to prepare for the deployment of thin clients.

He said this latest version was “the missing part in the desktop virtualization puzzle,” and included a new, user-friendly, web-based management console plusimportant features enhancing the performance and functionality of its popular thin client OS and management system.
