KUALA LUMPUR, 22 NOVEMBER 2009 -- A veteran wireless industry veteran has been made CEO of Malaysian communications firm YTL Communications to help realise its earlier promise of providing Malaysia’s first-ever nation-wide broadband service, according to the company.
YTL Group managing director Tan Sri Dato’ Dr Francis Yeoh Sock Ping said YTL Communications is now headed by Wing K. Lee. “Wing will oversee the deployment of the first-ever nation-wide 4G service that will bring a high-fidelity Internet experience to the masses.”
YTL Communications is a subsidiary and the communications utility of YTL Power International. The company received approval from the government regulator MCMC (Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission) to operate a 2.3 GHz WiMAX (worldwide interoperability for microwave access) wireless broadband network in Malaysia.
Extensive US experience
Yeoh added that Wing was a pioneer in wireless technologies and specifically WiMAX, prior to joining YTL. “Lee led next-generation mobile Internet device development at Clearwire. Earlier, he spent 15 years at Sprint Nextel, where he held senior management positions driving product development for the company’s WiMAX division. He also founded and managed Sprint’s Technology Innovation Programme, and led enterprise architecture for the launch of the first nation-wide wireless data network in the US.”
“As YTL Communications’ promise of seamless nationwide broadband connectivity is now set to become a reality, we are delighted that Wing is coming on board to provide his expertise and leadership,” said Yeoh. “With his nearly 20 years in wireless innovation and command of the latest global technologies, Wing is ideally suited to take the helm at YTL Communications during this exciting time.”
