Alcatel-Lucent expands China Telecom’s network
Alcatel-Lucent is deploying an all-IP (Internet Protocol) technology in China allowing China Telecom to address the burgeoning demand for high-speed video and data services for people across the country.
This deployment will help the Chinese government move closer towards the 'Broadband China' programme that aims to provide high-speed broadband connections to more than 250 million households in urban and rural locations by 2015.
The contract with China Telecom was secured through Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell, Alcatel-Lucent's flagship company in China.
"The application of our innovative IP/MPLS technology will be integral to the expansion of China Telecom's network, bringing broadband access to millions of people in China," said Ben Verwaayen, CEO of Alcatel-Lucent. "Alcatel-Lucent is proud to be making such an important contribution to China Telecom's plans and to the 'Broadband China' strategy, a contribution which also strongly reflects the key role China plays in our own global presence."
Extra connectivity across the country
The 'Broadband China' project aims to have extra connectivity across the country and 35 million new families will be connected via fibre-to-the-home by the end of 2012.
Also, 50 percent of broadband customers will experience speeds of 4 Mbps and 20 million new households will have access to fixed broadband by the end of this year.
In addition to enabling China Telecom to deliver high-bandwidth video and data broadband services, Alcatel-Lucent will also pave the way for China Telecom to deploy 100 gigabit per second Ethernet (100 GE) technology for future network upgrades, to enable even faster broadband speeds.
China Telecom will leverage Alcatel-Lucent's IP/MPLS services, networking, and backhaul expertise for this project.
It will also benefit from their extensive experience with large-scale global deployments, to address the growing and diverse broadband needs of consumers and businesses in future.
