Will boost telecommunications landscape, says Segi Maju

KUALA LUMPUR, 28 MAY 2009 A consortium is set to boost the Malaysian telecommunications landscape with the launch of a digital trunked radio service in the country.

The signing ceremony between SLW Corporation (a member of the SLW Group of Companies) and EADS Secure Networks as Malaysian Value Added Reseller was witnessed by the Malaysian minister of information, communications, arts and culture, Datuk Seri Utama Dr Rais Yatim. Under the agreement, Segi Maju Consortium (also a member of the SLW Group of Companies) launched its own digital trunked radio service, called DART.

Segi Maju Consortium and SLW Corporation director Azizan Abdul Razak said: In a world where technology is continuously evolving, we see radio communication moving towards digital technology whereby TETRA is the leading global standard approved by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) for digital trunked radio. Most of the leading manufacturers have introduced their digital radios into the Malaysian market. After having invested time and resources, we are now launching the digital trunked radio service in the country.

Segi Maju (SEGI) has been providing the 800MHz analogue trunk radio services since 1993 and is an existing trunk radio service provider. SEGI is licensed by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to provide trunked radio services under the provisions of NFP and NSP licences.

SEGI is operating a nationwide trunk radio service to the markets comprising oil and gas, plantations/agriculture, public safety/town councils, seaport, automobile or transportation, hospital and utility services and these still remain its main core businesses.

Importance of efficient digital trunked radio service

The government applauds steps taken by companies such as Segi Maju Consortium, SLW Corporation and EADS Secure Networks which have seen the importance for an efficient digital trunked radio service and at the same time moving the telecommunications industry to a more advanced plateau, said the minister.

SEGI's Razak said with the implementation of this service, customers would now have clear despatch trunked radio voice communication without compromising on security or privacy and will also have connectivity where network or applications can be implemented with IP connectivity. Other than the improved group voice communications, it also allows the mobile customers in transportation, construction, shipping, security and other industries to communicate instantly with staff via data services such as status, short data service (SDS) calls to telephones and mobile phones and also allows them to have access to the Internet.

We are pleased to partner with SLW Corporation as our value added reseller to provide Segi Maju Consortium a new, digital trunked radio communications platform, said EADS Secure Networks, Asia Pacific region, chief executive officer, François Bégaud. We will provide our best team to support them in ensuring the successful implementation and rollout.
