As more organisations worldwide are showing interest in cloud services, an IT vendor recently released its latest appliance specifically designed for cloud computing and virtualisation.

Silver Peak said its NX-10000 (NX-10K) appliance is for data centres implementing cloud and virtualisation.

The California-headquartered company specialises in wide area network (WAN) solutions and the NX-10K is its latest product for WAN optimisation and branch office deployment.

Silver Peak claims the NX-10K is the "industry's first multi-gigabit-per-second (Gbps) WAN optimisation appliance, .... deliver(ing) three-times more capacity and throughput performance than its nearest competitor".

An independent industry analyst said multi-gigabit optimisation is the way to go as more applications, data and services are centralised to be delivered to remote sites.

"For large enterprises and managed service providers planning to support technologies such as cloud computing and virtualisation, achieving the highest degree of performance while simplifying data centre architecture around space, cooling, and power will be crucial," said  Joe Skorupa, research vice president, data centre convergence, Gartner.

Enterprise requirements

Silver Peak said that based on feedback, their large customers are requiring large-capacity WANs that give them the flexibility to support collaboration, availability and mobility across a distributed environment.

The NX-10K allows organisations to be flexible by allowing them to start with a simple deployment. Over time, when expansion call for its, the NX-10K with four 10 Gbps interfaces and 2.5 Gbps of WAN throughput, will allow organisations to eventually add more applications over the WAN.

"Megatrends like cloud computing and virtualisation will place new demands on the data centre for WAN capacity and LAN connectivity, and Silver Peak is in front of this with the only WAN optimisation product truly suitable and built from the ground up for the next-generation data centre," said Damon Ennis, vice president of product management and field engineering for Silver Peak.

The new NX-10K for next-generation data centres, which retails for US$299,995, is currently available from Silver Peak resellers.
