A new low-cost sodium-ion battery is introduced. After 1000 cycles, the attenuation is less than 20%

At present, most electric vehicles use lithium-ion batteries as energy storage devices, but because lithium-ion batteries contain rare metals such as cobalt, which also makes battery manufacturing costs high, and indirectly drives the price of electric vehicles. Not conducive to the promotion and popularization of electric vehicles.

How to reduce the manufacturing cost of batteries has become a problem faced by larger battery and vehicle companies. To this end, private, scientific research institutions and universities have also actively participated.

Recently, Washington State University announced that it has jointly developed a sodium-ion battery with the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). Its energy storage capacity and chemical performance are comparable to some commercial lithium-ion batteries.

At the same time, this sodium-ion battery contains almost no rare precious metals such as lithium and cobalt, and there are sodium ion elements everywhere, which also makes the manufacturing cost of the overall battery drop sharply, which is conducive to reducing the total manufacturing cost of batteries and electric vehicles.

In addition to high energy density, vehicle-mounted power batteries also have a longer cycle life. It is reported that after research, the research team found that this sodium-ion battery is similar to some lithium-ion batteries, and it can still maintain more than 80% of the electricity after 1000 charge and discharge cycles.

At the same time, for sodium-ion batteries, the energy storage capacity is not as good as that of lithium-ion batteries. The team developed a layered metal oxide cathode and a liquid electrolyte containing additional sodium ions to promote internal sodium ions. Continue to exercise to ensure discharge efficiency.

At present, this sodium-ion battery is in the stage of practical verification, making preparations for future mass production. This also provides a feasible idea for the future research of cells without lithium and cobalt.
