The previous notch was called the TrueDepth camera array by Apple and was a controversial design decision introduced on the iPhone X in 2017. The subsequent iPhone models remained unchanged until the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro slightly reduced their size. On the iPhone 13, the TrueDepth camera array includes an infrared camera, floodlights, front camera, and point projector, and the speakers are moved to the top of the case.
