There are two types of structures. Two structures, the Cubic (CI80 and IA3) (No.206), are very similar to heavy trivalent lanthanide sequioxides as well. Two types of gadolinium site are found in cubic structures. They each have a coordination number 6, but they all have different coordination geometries. The monoclinic form (Pearson symbol M30, space group B2/ M, number 12) is the second. Cubic structures are more stable when stored at room temperatures. At 1200°C the phase becomes monoclinic. It is mainly a hexagonal phase above the 2100-22020 melting point.
