Why aluminium carbide has high hardness

What is Aluminium Carbide?

Aluminium carbide also known as aluminum tetracarbide with the molecular formula Al4C3, and is a form of aluminium carbonide. It is an ionic, translucent, hard, yellowish brown, hard rhombic hexagonal crystal. At room temperature it doesn’t conduct electricity and has a complex crystal structure. It is possible to have 4,5-6 coordinated metal atoms within the system. The length of Al-C bonds in this system is 1.90-2.22A. The shortest CC bond is 3.16A. The Xray studies show that one carbon atom is present in the structure, in the form of a distinct carbon negative ion C-4. It’s different than acetylene.

Method of synthesizing aluminium carbide

Al4C3 may be prepared by simply combining two simple substances at very high temperatures. Make a mixture with 1 part black smoke and 6 parts heavy aluminium powder. After moistening the mixture, add pine oil to it. Finally, pour a thick layer into a clay bowl and then sprinkle carbon powder over it. You should cover the crucible by a lid and then fill any gaps with refractory or asbestos clay. Place the crucible that contains the mixture into an oven for 30 min. You can improve the result by heating it up. Cool the product under cool water to get rid of excess aluminum. Aluminium carbide is a finely crystalline powder that can be washed in water. After this, alcohol should quickly be used to wash away the excess aluminium. At 80°C, the product can be dried. It contains large amounts of aluminium oxide. The pure aluminium carbide product is inert, however the colours of the products created by this method are often different due to the impurities present in raw materials. Pure aluminium carbide can also be produced if the soot-alluminium mixture is calcined with hydrogen. For 23 hours, the calcination should be performed at 1800-1900. You must grind the product and then calcine it again at the same temperature.

Principal uses for aluminium carbide

Aluminium carbide is used often to improve the strength and durability of ternary aluminum-based materials (Al-Si AlC or Al Ali AlC). AlC is essential in the technical area of the metal-alluminium industry. It can be used to reduce metal oxides within the metallurgical sector, or chemical reaction catalysts for the chemical industry. Also, it is useful in advanced ceramic materials, such as cutting- and mouldmaking in ceramics. Chemicalbook is an Ionic Compound Chemicalbook. Carbon atoms can only exist as C in its lattice structure. C is strong in alkalinity. Hydrolysis produces methane via C+4H–CH. AlC is also a methane dryer and generator. AlC’s rhombic Hexahedron is also a combination of AlC and AlC layers. The unique structure of AlC nanowires makes them a possibility cold electron emitter.

Aluminum carbide Price

Price will depend on how pure and small the aluminium carbide particles are. The purchase volume may also have an effect on cost. Large quantities of high quality aluminium carbide are more expensive. On our official website, you can see the price for aluminium carbide.
