Exfoliated MoS2 flakes

What is Molybdenum disulfide?

Molybdenum disulfide (or moly) is an inorganic compound composed of molybdenum and sulfur. Its chemical formula is MoS2.   Due to their unique physicochemical, optical, and electrical properties, Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanostructures have recently earned substantial thought from the scientific communities. Although MoS2 has been mostly highlighted for its industrial applications, its biological applicability has not been extensively explored. The introduction of nanotechnology in tissue engineering has significantly contributed to human welfare by displaying advancement in tissue regeneration. Assimilation of MoS2 nanostructures into the polymer matrix has been considered a persuasive material of choice for futuristic tissue engineering applications.

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2)-based nanostructures for tissue engineering applications: prospects and challenges

The current review provides a general discussion of the structural properties of different MoS2 nanostructures. Further, this article focuses on the interactions of MoS2 with biological systems regarding its cellular toxicity and biocompatibility, along with its capability for cell proliferation, adhesion, and immunomodulation. The article continues to confer the utility of MoS2 nanostructure-based scaffolds for various tissue engineering applications. The article also highlights some emerging prospects and possibilities of the applicability of MoS2-based nanostructures in large organ tissue engineering. Finally, the article concludes with a brief annotation on the challenges and limitations that need to be overcome to make plentiful use of this wonderful material for tissue engineering applications. Raman spectroscopy: Raman spectroscopy is data taken on every piece. Typically, flakes show two prominent Raman peaks at 383cm-1 (E2g- in a plane-) and 409cm-1 (A1g out-of-plane), and the FWHM (full-width-at-half-maximum) is less than 5cm-1 showing highly crystalline nature. Photoluminescence (PL): In the bulk form (2H-MoS2), molybdenum disulfide possesses an indirect band gap at 1.3eV. Therefore, PL measurements cannot probe the band gap directly. However, after illuminating with high laser intensity (hot photoluminescence), PL peaks at 1.3eV.

While bulk MoS2 in the 2H-phase is known to be an indirect-band gap semiconductor, monolayer MoS2 has a direct band gap. The layer-dependent optoelectronic properties of MoS2 have promoted much research in 2-dimensional MoS2-based devices. 2D MoS2 can be produced by exfoliating bulk crystals to produce single-layer to few-layer flakes through a dry, micromechanical process or solution processing.
