Many companies are now looking to get into the metal powder supply industry due to the growth in additive manufacturing. Because of their popularity in medical and aerospace industries, superalloys as well as titanium alloys are the preferred materials for the growing additive manufacturing market. For additive manufacturing to be successful, the titanium alloy or high-temperature alloy powder must possess a distinctive shape and dimension with high purity in order to satisfy requirements for high quality component production.

With the explosion in aerospace technology, including the creation of supersonic and ultrasonic engines, titanium alloy materials have seen a dramatic increase in demand. To further reduce weight and increase the thrust-to-weight ratio of aircraft, titanium alloys are increasingly used in aircraft engine compressor wheels, blades, integral blade disks, casings, and rotors, as well as missile rudder wing skeletons, cabins, and engine inlets–manufacturing of airway and other parts. There are increasing demands for titanium alloys to be used at high temperatures due to aerospace vehicle performance. The development of high-temperature alloys of titanium is possible.

Canadian technology company will utilize plasma milling to produce titanium alloy powder. The powder will be used in additive manufacturing for medical device and aerospace manufacturers. This company will also use plasma milling to create special powders that can be used in metal additive manufacturing. It can make spherical powders of metal with high precision and controllability. Company will develop the next generation plasma milling technology that creates a range of additive-manufacturing metal and composite powders.

TA32 titanium alloy, whose nominal composition is Ti-5.5Al-3.5Sn-3Zr-1Mo-0.5Nb-0.7Ta-0.3Si, is a new type of near-alpha titanium alloy newly developed. Although the material remains below 550°C, it has excellent creep and durable properties. It will likely replace steel and nickel-based superalloys. Short-term service temperatures can reach 600 degrees. It has exceptional mechanical properties including creep, fatigue, tensile and fatigue.

Additive Manufacturing. TA32 Titanium Alloy Pule

To complete development of TA32, this technology utilizes water-cooled copper crucible vacuum induction smelting and gas atomization powdering technology. To melt titanium alloy rods, electromagnetic induction heating is used. The molten metal can be made using bottom injection. In order to create a steady and stable liquid flow, the liquid goes through the guide tube. Once the allotment liquid flows through the tube and the atomizing nose it passes through, the high speed airflow produced by the Atomizing Nose is broken down and solidified. It has exceptional production efficiency as well as outstanding benefits in terms of its high yield.

This technology produced TA32 powdered titanium alloy. It has exceptional properties like high purity and high sphericity. The TA32 had a particle size range from 15-53mm. The powder’s oxygen content was 1000ppm. There was also a 190ppm of nitrogen and 50ppm of hydrogen. The amount of different impurity elements in the powder was well below what is required by the GB /T3620.1 -2016 standard. We tested the powder’s physical properties. The powder’s median particle size was 36 mm. The bulk density of the powder was 2.5 g/ cm3. Hall flow rates were 45 s/ 50 g. All performance indicators satisfied the requirements for metal 3D printing.

The laser energy densities of TA32 alloy powder were controlled. TA32 was then subject to different processes. The metallographic tests revealed that the grain size in the TA32 powder was small and free from visible cracks. Tests of mechanical properties were done on the test piece. The results showed that its tensile strength was 1200MPa at room temperature and its elongation reached 8%. High-temperature Tensile Strengths of the test pieces were 867 MPa and 819 MPa and 712MPa at 500 degrees C, 600 degrees C and 550 degrees C respectively. The plastic values for these samples are 14.4%, 15.9% and 17.0%.
