What is fumed silica?

Vapor phase silicon dioxide (commonly known as vapor phase white carbon black in China, from now on referred to as vapor phase SiO2) is a fine, particular amorphous silicon dioxide product produced by the high-temperature hydrolysis of halosilane in a hydrogen-oxygen flame. The original particle size of this product is between 7-40nm, the specific surface area is generally in the range of 100m2/g~400m2/g, the product purity is high, and the SiO2 content is not less than 99.8%. It is a significant inorganic nanopowder material. Due to their superior stability, reinforcement, thickening, and thixotropy are widely used in rubber, plastics, electronics, coatings, medicine, agriculture, and CMP. Vapor phase SiO2 generally has two types of products, hydrophilic and hydrophobic, wherein hydrophobic products are obtained through surface chemical treatment using hydrophilic products.

In China, there were no national and industrial standards before 2007. Shenyang Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. used the national military average GJB 1966-94 (see Table 3), while Guangzhou Jibisheng Technology and Industry Co., Ltd. used the enterprise standard Q/(GZ) GBS 01-2002 (see Table 4) to modify and adapt the international standard ISO3262-20:2000 (E), and added the measurement content and requirements for critical technical indicators such as the specific surface area of the product.

 

Application of Vapor Phase Silica

Anti-settling agent: Vapor phase white carbon black is an ideal anti-settling agent, which forms a very uniform and stable hydrogen bond structure and is a three-dimensional network structure. Therefore, it is very effective in preventing the deposition of pigments in the paint system. Especially for color paste systems, an appropriate amount of addition will significantly improve the stability of the color paste. It can reduce the amount of wetting dispersant to enhance the color paste's applicability and reduce the color paste's impact on the paint system. The anti-sedimentation effect of fumed silica is very beneficial for coating storage, especially for certain pigments such as metal powder and flakes, which are highly prone to precipitation and cannot be wholly suspended. Fumed silica can ensure its dispersion and nonprecipitation, significantly improving the coating's opening performance. Based on the total formula, the amount of fumed silica is in the range of 0.4% to 0.8%, but in exceptional cases, such as zinc-rich paint, it needs to be increased to 2%.
