What is Sodium Silica used in

What exactly is Sodium silicate?

The sodium silicate, which is also known as paohua alkali is an inorganic chemical, its aqueous solution is frequently referred as sodium silicate which is a mineral adhesive. The chemical formula for it is Na2O*nSiO2, it is a silicate that is soluble inorganic which has a variety of uses. Silicate of sodium that dissolves in water is colorless, slight transparent or translucent glass body. It is typically used as filler, fabric fire retardant and adhesive.

What are the applications that Sodium Silicate is used in?

Soaps and detergent

Sodium silicate has the ability to enhance the surface effects for example, wetting with organic surfactants (reducing tension on the surface) it helps to keep small dirt or oil particles trapped in the cleaning solution, or helping to eliminate dirt from the surface.

The alkalinity that sodium silicate has allows it neutralize the acidity of soils and help in the emulsification and dispersion of oil and dispersing of protein.

Packaging

Silicate sodium used as a coating can increase the hardness of the paper and improve their resistance to humidity fire or pests. Silicate is also used as an oil repellent for its own use.

Sodium silicate can be used as a primer in the application of other materials like paraffins, naphthalene chloride, wax, gum, nitrocellulose, varnish and other cardboard coatings. It makes the pores smaller on cardboard and minimizes the water absorption of paper, which reduces the amount of coating required for topcoat.

Construction

Soluble Silica can be used as cement binder. When Portland is mixed with cement, the components undergo chemical reactions that create solid bonds. It is also used to improve the durability of concrete.

Mining industry

Soluble silicate can be found in numerous mineral enrichment process. The primary use of sodium silicate in ore flotation is as an antiflocculant that helps disperse undesirable siliceous substances. The only requirement is a small amount silicate in a concentration comparable to that used for cleaning processes is needed. Silicate’s ability to create a sodium ion layer on the particle’s surface is important for preparing the surface for the specific separation. Silicate from sodium helps prevent the corrosion of the ball, thus reducing wearing in the mill.

The treatment of water

Dilute anionic silica aqueous solution made by soluble silicate is able to slow the process of corrosion on metal surface.

As an ingredient in water, dissolved SiO2 helps prevent the corrosion of the metal storage tanks and distribution lines. It can reduce the corrosion of pipelines as well as pumps due to acidic water (for instance, water from mine drainage) Also, it reduces the possibility of corrosion grinding of ball rods; and helps prevent corrosion of machinery used in spray drying, agglomeration or dry mixed detergent formulations; and the metal components in disheswashing and laundry equipment. A component of the liquid that is used in the permanent automobile cooling system. It is an ingredient in water treatment chemicals in cooling towers and boilers.
