However, the commercial applications of TiB2-based ceramics are not fully realized yet, with limited applications mainly as intermetallic composite evaporator boats and armor materials. The difficulty in densification of TiB2 ceramics is one of the most important limiting factors. The nature of covalent bonding, low self-diffusion coefficient as well as the presence of oxide layers (TiO2, B2O3) on the powder surface are believed to be the causes of the poor sinterability of TiB2 ceramics [4]. To overcome these problems, a variety of metallic and non-metallic sintering agents were attempted to promote the densification process. Earlier sintering studies mainly focused on using metallic sintering additives, such as Ni, Fe, Co, and Cr, and high density (~ 99% R.D.) was achieved due to liquid phase sintering. However, the addition of metals led to inferior properties, especially at elevated temperatures. More recently, non-metallic additives such as SiC, AlN, Si3N4, B4C, and C were used to improve sinterability while maintaining good mechanical and other properties. Sinterability was enhanced due to either forming a transient liquid phase or exhaustion of the surface oxide layers due to the reaction between the sintering additives and the oxides on the TiB2 powder surfaces. In addition to the challenge of densification, the toughness of monolithic TiB2 ceramics was still lower than many popular technical ceramics such as silicon nitride and zirconia, which further limits its use in many engineering applications. Developing TiB2-based ceramic composites may provide an effective approach to improve the toughness of the materials since toughening mechanisms such as crack-deflection/bridging/branching can be introduced in multi-phase materials. In the present investigation, we focused on the effects of W.C./Co inclusion on the densification, phase composition, and mechanical properties of TiB2 and TiB2–SiC composites.
