Silicon hexaboride is insoluble in water, resistant to oxidation, thermal shock, and chemical attack, especially with high strength and stability under thermal shock.

It decomposes in hot concentrated sulfuric acid.

It can be obtained by directly heating a mixture of boron and silicon, using HF and HNO3 to remove excess silicon, and then using molten KOH to decompose the B3Si in the mixture.
