Its density is 4.80g/cm3 which is 14degC. Mohs hardness ranges between 1.0 and 1.5. It starts to decay at 1370°C. At 1600°C it becomes metallic molybdenum or sulfur.
Molybdenum disulfide cannot be dissolved in water, dilute or concentrated sulfuric, is generally insoluble with other acids and organic solvents but can be dissolved in aqua regia as well as boiled concentrated sulfuric.
What applications can molybdenum disulfide be used for?
Molybdenum-disulfide is a widely used carbon brush additive in the machinery and automotive industries. You can add it to grease, PTFE nylon, paraffin and stearic to increase friction reduction and improve lubrication.
Molybdenum dioxide can be used for the release of non-ferrous materials and as a forging tool lubricant. These can improve service times and working conditions, prolong their life spans, reduce surface damage and prevent cold welding. You can mix molybdenum disulfide and some volatile solvents together to spray on metal surfaces. Or, you can add engineering plastics with it to create lubricating elements.
