In 1973, it was suggested that titanium disulfide could be used as a cathode for rechargeable battery. High electrical conductivity has drawn attention to the Groups V and IV halogen compound. The original battery was described using a lithium cathode and anode. The battery’s energy density is high. It is also reversible.
Titanium disulfide is the lightest chalcogenide and also the cheapest.
The fastest Lithium-ion diffusion occurs in Titanium Disulfide.
The degradation of the cathode is the main issue. The battery is charged by this reversible inserting process. The titanium disulfide layer is also the lightest, cheapest and most compact of the layered dihalides of the IV and V group.
In the 1990s titanium disulfide (and other cathode substances such as manganese oxide and chromium oxide) were used in rechargeable batteries.
TiS2 cathodes are used in solid state lithium batteries. Most lithium-ion cells use liquid electrolytes that can be flammable, posing safety concerns. There have been a number of solid electrolytes proposed to replace the hazardous liquid electrolytes.
The high resistance at the interface reduces intercalation reversibility for most solid-state battery types and reduces service life. TIS2 is less affected by these unwanted interface effects. The all-solid state lithium battery has a power density of 1000 W/kg, and its maximum power density after 50 cycles is 1.5 kW/kg. The average battery capacity decreased by less than 10 percent in 50 cycles. While titanium disulfide batteries have high conductivity, energy density, and power, their discharge voltage is lower than other lithium batteries.
