The online hiring activities for the technology sector in Southeast Asia have showed slow year-on-year (YoY) growth for August, according to the latest Monster Employment Index (MEI).
Online hiring for the IT, telecommunications, and business process outsourcing (BPO) industry in the Philippines and Malaysia have recorded 2 percent and 1 percent growth between August 2016 and 2017, respectively. Singapore experienced the highest YoY growth with 3 percent.
Meanwhile, the demand for hardware, software, and telecom professionals in the Philippines have recovered from -4 percent YoY decrease in July to 4 percent YoY growth in August.
Online hiring activities for the same talent in Malaysia have slumped from 56 percent YoY growth in July to 23 percent YoY decline in August. Singapore saw no change in demand for these talents.
"While the return-on-investment of every individual hire remains a concern for management, it is also crucial for employers to remember to focus on hiring holistically," said Sanjay Modi, managing director of online job portal Monster.com in Asia Pacific and Middle East.
"This means looking beyond candidates' existing qualifications and background, taking a step further to evaluate individuals based on their soft skills. This can reveal traits that can be beneficial to the workplace, such as whether the candidate is a quick-thinker or a team player - all of which play a part in helping businesses move ahead."
Despite the sluggish growth, Modi remained positive that the online hiring activities for tech will grow. "The coming months are still looking positive for candidates looking to get into IT as organisations continue to focus on boosting existing digital offerings."
