Aluminum nitride is synthesized by carbothermal reduction of alumina or by direct nitridation of aluminum. Aluminum nitride density is 3.26g/cm3. Although it does not melt, it decomposes above 2500°C at atmospheric pressure.
Aluminum nitride is covalently bonded and can resist sintering without the help of liquid molding additives. In general, oxides such as Y2O3 or CaO allow sintering at temperatures between 1600 °C and 1900 °C.
