What is Molybdenum disulfide?

Molybdenum disulfide is used as a dry lubricant in, e.g., greases, dispersions, friction materials, and bonded coatings. Molybdenum-sulfur complexes may be used in suspension but are more commonly dissolved in lubricating oils at concentrations of a few percent. Molybdenum disulfide, MoS2, the most common natural form of molybdenum, is extracted from the ore and then purified for direct use in lubrication. Since molybdenum disulfide is of geothermal origin, it is durable to withstand heat and pressure. This is particularly so if small amounts of sulfur can react with iron and provide a sulfide layer compatible with MoS2 in maintaining the lubricating film. Combining molybdate and water-soluble sulfides can provide lubrication and corrosion inhibition in cutting fluids and metal-forming materials. Oil-soluble molybdenum-sulfur compounds, such as thiophosphates and thiocarbamates, protect engines against wear, oxidation, and corrosion. A layer of molybdenum atoms

A layer of molybdenum atoms is sandwiched between two layers of sulfur atoms. When molybdenum disulfide is dispersed between two metal surfaces, a layer binds to each metal surface through the sulfur atoms. Then the asperities (surface irregularities on the metals) are prevented from coming into contact. Sliding contact is between the outer layers of sulfur atoms, which only interact weakly. Therefore, the surfaces can slide easily relative to one another.

A low friction molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) dry film lubricant that prevents corrosion, galling, seizing, and fretting about extending wear life when operating at temperatures between -350°F and +500°F. 9A is an excellent solution for lubricating parts that will be operated in corrosive environments, are seldom lubricated after manufacturing yet must retain permanent lubrication, and where parts may be frequently re-assembled. A low-friction molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) dry film lubricant performs similarly to 9A, where low VOC and no lead are preferred. A low lead-free friction MoS2 corrosion protection dry film coating can be used as an alternative to 9A when materials can not be cured for one hour at 400°F.
