Related knowledge of titanium aluminum carbide

Titanium-aluminum carbide is a new type of ceramic material with a ternary layered structure. It has unique properties and has attracted wide attention from materials scientists and physicists.

Physical and chemical properties of titanium carbide
Titanium carbide, chemical formula TiC, relative atomic weight 59.91, the theoretical carbon content of 20.05%, the density of 4.93 g/cm3, the melting point of 3160°C, the boiling point of 4300°C. It is a gray powder with a NaCl-type cubic crystal structure. Because of its high melting point, high hardness, and good chemical stability, it is mainly used to make cermets, heat-resistant alloys, and hard alloys. Adding 6~30% TiC to WC-Co series cemented carbide to form TiC-WC solid solution with WC can significantly improve the alloy’s red heat resistance, wear resistance, oxidation resistance, and corrosion resistance. WC-Co cemented carbide is more suitable for processing steel. Alloys such as Ni-Mo can also be used as binders to make tungsten-free cemented carbide, which can improve the turning speed and the precision and finish of the processed parts.

The characteristics of titanium aluminum carbide
Titanium aluminum carbide (Ti3AlC2) belongs to the hexagonal crystal system and has the characteristics of metal and ceramic: it has the same electrical and thermal conductivity as metal and also has high elastic modulus and excellent high-temperature mechanical properties similar to ceramics. It also has good thermal shock resistance, anti-destructive ability, and excellent chemical resistance.

Application of titanium aluminum carbide
The Al in the MAX phase of the Ti-Al-C system will rapidly diffuse and undergo selective oxidation during the oxidation process to form a dense Al2O3 film to prevent further oxidation of the matrix material. Ti3AlC2 and Ti2AlC) and the formed Al2O3 make the system material have high-temperature self-healing ability. In a high-temperature environment, cracks or gaps on the surface of the material are filled with oxides, so the material can restore its original properties, especially mechanical properties. This feature is of great significance for maintaining the mechanical properties of the material and improving the stability and reliability of the material, making it more likely to be used in high-temperature environments.
Titanium aluminum carbide (Ti3AlC2 and Ti2AlC) has the characteristics of rapid Al diffusion and selective oxidation at high temperature, respectively, which can realize the butt joint and interlayer welding of the material itself. Compared with single-phase materials, aluminum carbide (Ti3AlC2 and Ti2AlC) has been greatly improved.
MAX phase products, especially titanium silicon carbide (Ti3SiC2) have a series of characteristics, such as high damage resistance, good mechanical and thermal properties, making it possible to be used as nuclear fuel in gas-cooled fast reactors in fourth-generation nuclear reactors In recent years, the ability of titanium silicon carbide (Ti 3 SiC 2) to resist radiation damage has attracted more and more attention.
Titanium carbide aluminum powder is widely used in the largest special ceramic materials, electronic materials, high-temperature structural materials, brush materials, chemical anti-corrosion materials, and high-temperature heating materials.
