Modulus is N=SiO2/Na2O (molar relationship). Modulus (generally between 1.5-3.5) is an important parameter in sodium silicate. A sodium silicate’s modulus determines how hard it will dissolve in water. While warm water can dissolve sodium silicate when its n constant, it is not possible to dissolve it in hot water if the n grows. When n > 3, steam must be used at 4°C.
A higher modulus in sodium silicate means that there is more Si. The viscosity and bonding forces of sodium silicate increase, as it is easier to break down and harden. Additionally, different levels of polymerization result in different silicic acid compositions in sodium silicate hydrolysate. This has an important impact on its production and use. So sodium silicate of different moduli can have different applications.
The sodium silicate can also be broken down into sodium silicate liquid and sodium silicate solid.
Liquid sodium silicate
A liquid called Na2O*nSiO2 can be distinguished by the amount of quartz sand per unit of alkali. There are many colors available, including black and gray. There is neutral Na2O*nSiO2, alkaline and weakly basic Na2O*nSiO2 as well as compound Na2O*nSiO2.
Solid sodium silicate
Solid-state Na2O*nSiO2 has a blue appearance and is an intermediate product. While the Na2O*nSiO2 created by dry casting has a transparent bulk, it can also be used to make liquid Na2O*nSiO2. There are several common types of Na2O*nSiO2 product options: powder solid, block solid, instant sodium Silicate, zero-water sodium metasilicate pentahydrate sodium Metasilicate, sodium orthosilicate and powder solid.
Why is sodium silicate needed?
It is one of the most useful fillers in the soap business. Mixing sodium silicate in laundry soap can lower the soap’s alkalinity. This will reduce the soap’s water loss, improve washing abilities, and help prevent soap from becoming rancid.
In synthetic detergents, sodium silicate helps to wash and stabilize foam.
Useful for filler in papermaking
It is used for the manufacture of silica gel.
This is used to bond clay and sand in foundry industries, and create all sorts of molds and cores.
What are the different names for sodium silicates?
Sodium silicate, a type of inorganic sodium salt, has silicate as a counterion. It can also be called water glass or sodium metasilicate.
Concrete: What is sodium silicate?
Alkali activator for alkali-active cement can include sodium silicate. Concrete uses it as a setting agent and silicate mineral coating, which improves durability and waterproofing.
