The Sony Walkman was invented in the early 1960s by Japanese inventor Masayoshi Nakajima. Nakajima was an electronics engineer who had worked at’s electronics division. He wanted to create a phone that would be more compact and affordable than previous designs.

Nakajima’s second prototype was released in 1964 and featured additional features such as a built-in alarm clock, speakers, and a meter reading display. Despite initial opposition from many industry professionals, Nakajima continued to work on his product until it was finally approved for mass production in 1973.
Nakajima’s third prototype was released in 1976 and featured a more advanced design, including a video camera, speaker, and a digital television control unit. It also included a hard case for protection against and damage.

In the late 1960s, Nakajima decided to take a break from his work and focus on his personal interests. He sold his remaining to Yahoo Japan, which later became TMS Corporation.
