KFC's new, healthy-food concept restaurant in Hangzhou, called KPRO, is now offering Alipay's Smile to Pay service.
The service allows users to easily authenticate their payments through a combination of facial scanning and mobile phone numbers.
Facial scanning for payment takes only one to two seconds by utilising a 3D camera and a "live-ness detection algorithm" to guarantee a user's identity. According to Ant Financial, the algorithm is able to detect shadows of human beings and block photos or videos that might be used by someone to hijack a person's Alipay account.
Besides that, the Smile to Pay technology also uses the phone number check to ensure the security of transactions for users.
Showing its confidence in the service, Alipay announced that it will offer loss coverage if theft of a customer's Smile to Pay account occurs.
"While Smile to Pay provides convenience for users like never before, we have always placed security at the core of this technology," said Jidong Chen, Ant Financial's director of biometric identification technology. "We are excited to introduce Smile to Pay to KPRO customers and look forward to seeing it play an important role in digital financial services."
Looking forward, Alipay's Smile to Pay option will be made available for other clients that are open to use this new technology.
